Analytics tools provide invaluable feedback on the performance of your site. They can tell you how many monthly visitors does your website gets, how are visitors finding your website and how are these visitors engaging on your website. The more you know about your visitors and their behavior, the easier it is to optimize and scale it. Based on your analytics, you can plan your marketing and content strategy and optimize website experience for your visitors.
To implement analytics on your website, you need to integrate an external plugin or code which monitors and report your website data. Here are some of my recommendation for analytics tools you can use for your website:
Google Analytics is the most widely used analytics tools and offers a wide range of features like extensive visitor data, real-time analytics, content analysis, conversion and goal tracking. It’s free and can be easily integrated with your website by adding a tracking snippet to your website code. Google also has an enterprise analytics tools which is not being discussed here but you can find information on their website -> Analytics 360 Suite
Piwik is an open source alternative for Google analytics, mainly used by government websites to keep their data private. Piwik’s features include tracking visitors, actions, Referrers (search, websites, campaigns, social), goals, e-commerce analytics, real-time reports, segmentation with advanced admin settings. Piwik is also available on the cloud at $25 per month for up to 100,000 actions limit and 30 days free trial.
Statcounter is free, yet a powerful analytics tool with almost all the features Google analytics provides like keyword insights, page visits, traffic source, inbound links, unique and returning visitors summary, Location and ISP of visitors. Statcounter is free for first 250,000 pageloads and is nominally priced at $5 per month for next 250,000 pageloads.
Woopra is a customer analytics platform that can help you to better understand your customers’ behavior across multiple devices and touch points, including live chat and email on your website and mobile app. Besides creating a clearer profile of your visitors and their actions, Woopra allows you to discover dead ends inside funnels and track customer retention. Woopra offers a free account with limited features available for 30,000 actions per month.
Mixpanel is another event-based analytics tool designed for SMBs. Mixpanel has a range of features (funnels, segments, retention, notifications and more) to help you easily measure what people are doing in your app on iOS, Android, or the web. Mixpanel is free for up to 20M data points or 1000 profiles.
